Career Development Curriculum for First Year Students

Interested in including career development topics in your class?  We have created the following resources to help you do just that.

This version is targeted at first year students although much of it is relevant for any student.  Other versions of these resources targeted at upper class students will be available soon.

These resources cover two areas where we want to support students during their UAlbany journey.

  1. Provide them with a Career Development Process that articulates tangible steps they can take towards their future career.
  2. Assist them in developing and communicating the skills that employers are most interested in. These skills are defined by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) as Career Readiness Competencies.

Each resource explains one specific step of the Career Development Process and includes relevant discussion topics, in class exercises, assignments, and student facing resources.  You do not need to include all the content or all the steps in the Career Development process.  Use whatever you think is relevant for your students

Overview: This is an overview of the Career Development process and Career Readiness. Read this document first to understand the process and the elements of Career Readiness.  Regardless of which step or steps in the process you choose, we would like you to introduce the entire process before you present a specific step.

Step 1 – Explore: Think about who you are and what you want.

Step 2 – Focus: Research specific careers or majors and narrow down your choices.

Step 3 – Prepare: Build your plan and develop materials and skills.

Step 4 – Take Action: Implement your plan.
