Whether visible or invisible, our office has tools and resources to help students with disabilities. We understand students with disabilities turn into excellent employees with disabilities but the job search can be challenging. The combination of advocacy, inclusivity, and determination can help to overcome some of those challenges and our office is here to play a part in the process.
How CPD Supports Students with Disabilities:
• Just being there and offering support to ALL students on campus
• Having easily accessible templates and examples
• Providing multiple ways to meet (in person, phone, zoom, email feedback)
• Giving direct feedback and limiting filler words and/or colloquialisms
Example: “This bullet point can be edited for clarity” vs. “Well, I feel like this bullet doesn’t make the most sense in the world, maybe we can tighten it up”
• Provide written feedback/notes/synopsis of meeting
• Practice interviews to help with interview skills (such as: including eye contact, body language, reducing anxiety, and how to best communicate skills)
• Offer support in asking potential employers for accommodations – for the interview and as an employee
