Overview and Basic Functions:
Xanterra Travel Collection® is seeking an experienced sustainability professional to develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive environmental strategies and programs for Grand Canyon Railway & Hotel (GCR/H) in Williams, AZ and The Grand Hotel (TGH) and Grand Canyon Trading Post in Tusayan, AZ. The Director of Sustainability will ensure continual improvement of the Environmental Management Systems applied to hotel, restaurant, retail, railroad, machine shop, and other operations.
Primary areas of responsibility include hazardous materials and fuel management, storm water management, energy and water efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions tracking, solid waste reduction and management, environmental communication and education, integrated pest management, environmentally preferable procurement, and photovoltaics systems. This role allows for an opportunity to apply a passion for sustainability, technical knowledge, and leadership skills to provide legendary hospitality with a softer footprint®.

Responsibilities
- Fully understand and support Xanterra Mission Statement and Core Values.
- Ensure legal compliance with local, NPS, state, and federal environmental statutes and regulations and minimize legal liabilities from potential hazards. This may include regulatory requirements with hazardous materials, hazardous waste (RCRA), universal waste, CFCs/halons, pesticides, stormwater management, and fuel storage and delivery system management.
- Develop, implement, and maintain environmental strategies and programs for GCR/H and TGH operations and departments in conjunction with General Managers, Department Heads, and the Corporate Director of Sustainability.
- Maintain certification of the Our Softer Footprint® Environmental Management System (EMS) under ISO 14001:2015 standards through internal and external audits.
- Develop and implement appropriate training programs to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and company requirements.
- Track and report on all utility use through Xanterra’s Ecometrix platform including GHG emissions, electricity, electricity from on-site photovoltaics, natural gas, propane, gasoline, diesel, biodiesel, water, reclaimed water, waste water, waste, universal waste, hazardous waste, various recycling streams, refrigerant, sustainable cuisine, single-use plastics elimination, and others.
- Complete timely and accurate reporting on topics including Tier II, RCRA, pesticide and herbicide use, oily water sampling, wastewater, and sustainability goals.
- Liaise with all property departments in setting standards and monitoring results.
- Develop a Green Team for GCR/H, hold regularly scheduled meetings, and establish goals and objectives for the committee.
- Perform regular inspections and monitoring.
- Cultivate a culture of sustainability through effective leadership, setting an example, messaging campaigns, and other means of ensuring accountability.
- Select and monitor of any environmental consultants and contractors, as needed.
- Review all GCR/H and TGH capital expenditure project ensuring alignment with sustainability goal.
- Prepare and administer the annual financial budgets and capital plan for the Sustainability Department.
- Keep abreast of regulatory developments, industry trends, and new technologies that may contribute to reducing Xanterra’s environmental footprint through annual training on HAZWOPER, RCRA, DOT, and other topics.
- Serve as an environmental spokesperson through participation in environmental groups, award applications, multimedia communication strategies for guests, and other strategies.
- Ensure effective oversight of TGH sustainability programs through an on-site presence of at least one day per quarter.
- Hire, train, and supervise any staff required to achieve objectives. This may consist of one sustainability specialist at GCR/H.
- Travel to one or more other Xanterra properties annually to perform an internal EMS audit.
- Research, test, and implement sustainable technologies and procedures and share with other Xanterra operations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Sustainability, Environmental Engineering, Business, or related field.
- Five years of professional experience in all phases of environmental sustainability and/or compliance.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience in technical writing and public speaking.
- Familiarity with environmental laws and regulations as they relate to the hospitality industry, and an ability to keep abreast of this complex field.
- Experience in developing environmental initiatives and implementing all phases of a company-wide environmental program.
- Experience assessing cost effectiveness, cost savings, program effectiveness, and program compliance.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Offices products including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Possess and maintain a valid/clear Driver’s License.
What Would Set You Apart:
- Master’s Degree in Sustainability or a related field, plus four years of experience.
- Experience maintaining an ISO 14001-certified Environmental Management System (EMS).
- Experience in the railroad and/or hospitality industries.
- HAZWOPER 24 or 40-hour Certified.
- DOT Hazmat Transportation & Security Awareness Training, per CFR 172.704
- LEED AP or other sustainability certification.
Basic Competencies:
- Verbal comprehension (Understand oral and written communications, follow detailed directions).
- Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions).
- Reasoning skills (problem solving and troubleshooting skills).

- May require some travel out of state and within the region of responsibility.
- Complete required training and certification related to the position.
- Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work as needed.
Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is:
- Frequently sitting, handling, and lifting/carrying up to 20 lbs.
- Constantly listening, hearing, seeing, and speaking.
- Frequently standing, walking, and reaching outward.
- Occasionally reaching above shoulder, climbing, squatting, kneeling, bending, lifting/carrying up to 100 lbs, and pushing/pulling up to 25 lbs.
- May be required to stand and walk for long periods of time on cement floors and to occasionally walk on uneven surfaces.
