Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Position Description
The Baldwin School is seeking a dynamic, collaborative leader to serve as its Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Acting as a resource, guide, and strategic planner, the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) will continue the momentum built over the last two years to ensure that Baldwin continues to cultivate a respectful school community and fulfills its commitment to furthering intentional growth and progress in the area of diversity, equity and inclusion. This Senior Leadership Team member will report directly to the Head of School and will help design and advance the robust learning experiences, programming and policies that touch all areas of school life and lead to a more equitable, restorative, and inclusive school environment.
Responsibilities include:
- Work with the Head of School and in partnership with other senior leaders to lead the School’s DEI vision and strategy in a mission-centric manner;
- Develop and guide the School’s DEI plans, programs, and metrics for evaluation as they pertain to stated goals and outcomes;
- Lead the School’s DEI Committee to facilitate the work of its faculty and staff committee members and support division-specific programming;
- Serve as a resource for administrators, faculty, and staff. This includes providing proactive and responsive support and coaching to campus leaders regarding DEI-related policy, programming, and supervisory practice, and to faculty and staff on their respective programs, multi-culturally competent pedagogy, and responsive practices;
- Oversee DEI-related professional development throughout the year, including annual training for all faculty and staff on topics of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.
- Work with the Dean of Academic Affairs, Academic Council, faculty and staff to review, promote, advise on, and support curricula across all grades and disciplines to ensure it aligns with DEI goals;
- Work in collaboration with the Director of Human Resources to examine hiring, talent management, and human resources administration systems and policies, identifying opportunities to strengthen practices and ensure equity;
- Partner with the Director of Human Resources to discuss and address incidents of bias and DEI-related issues in the workplace;
- Communicate and coordinate with all School constituents, including students, parents, and graduates, to advance DEI vision and strategy through assemblies, programs, meetings, committee work, and other outreach;
- Work with faculty and staff to plan learning experiences for all grades through advisory and other regular or special programs;
- Serve as a regular, active listener to students, employees, and other constituents to support their needs, assess the effectiveness of School’s DEI work, and identify areas for additional programming or other work;
- Help advise student affinity and alliance groups in the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools;
- Contribute to and be present at various school meetings and functions to provide support and input, including internal meetings across the Divisions as well as external meetings and events with parents, alums, and other constituents; and
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Head of School.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Experience in and expertise leading DEI programs;
- A strategic mindset and an understanding of and ability to navigate the changing landscape of DEI work;
- Ability to represent the best interest of the School, its mission, and strategic priorities;
- Understanding of child and adolescent development; Knowledge of and experience working in a school environment preferred;
- An empathic and collaborative leadership style;
- A transparent and accessible approach coupled with the tact and interpersonal skills necessary to build and sustain diverse relationships with broad constituencies;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Strong presentation skills with a variety of constituencies;
- Student-centered focus and commitment to Baldwin’s all-girls mission; and
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and professional boundaries.
Qualifications: The candidate must demonstrate an understanding of and support for key precepts in DEI training and, ideally, have a graduate degree in a related field. They should have at least 5 years of experience in creating, managing and delivering high quality, comprehensive training and education programs. The candidate should be committed to fostering a collaborative and restorative educational environment focused on inclusion and belonging, have the ability to effectively work in a diverse school community, and be genuinely interested and enthusiastic about working with both children and adults.
