We are currently looking for an intern to join our Plant Science group. The Plant Science Intern helps support, set up and maintain plant-pathology bioassays.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Essential Functions
- Set up plant bioassays, including preparation and labeling of pots, petri dishes and plants for testing.
- Maintain plant pathogen bank and culture medium inventory.
- Maintain greenhouse and laboratory-based experiments, applying treatments using cabinet track sprayers, pipettes, or as otherwise directed.
- Help gather bioassay data.
Other Duties
- Contribute to general lab, growth room and greenhouse upkeep.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Pursuing or awarded a degree in biological or plant-related sciences.
Experience: Prefer previous microbiology/plant pathology lab experience, skills of aseptic technique, and someone who enjoys working with plants.
Essential Physical and Mental Requirements
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to work at a lab bench or sit at a desk for extended periods.
• Extensive use of pipettes, microscopes, computer keyboard, mouse and monitor.
• Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
Mental Requirements:
• Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in workload priorities, ability to prioritize tasks, ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Basic understanding of experimental design and protocols.
- Good mathematics and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to input and synthesize data using MS Excel.
- Attention to detail and ability to identify patterns.
