Tips for Applying

Letters of Recommendation: Three letters are required by most programs. The reference should be someone who can speak to your academic abilities (such as a professor) unless otherwise specified.

Personal Statement or Statement of Goals: Look for any instructions before starting to write. Not every program will require this, however, those that do often look heavily at this essay. Do not send in a generic essay. Make your statement specific to the university you apply to and its degree offering.

Standardized Tests: The GRE or Graduate Record Exam is a test required by some programs to show readiness for graduate-level work. Some schools and programs do not require the GRE, so it is important to look at each program page carefully.

International students may be required to take an English Proficiency Test. For questions on required scores and accepted tests, please see our Information for International Applicants page.

CV/Resume: Some programs may require a Curriculum Vitae (CV) which is a detailed summary of one’s educational and professional experience. Others may look for resumes; a shorter, more succinct overview of someone’s experience. To see examples of these types of documents, please visit our Career and Professional Development resource page.

Transcripts or Mark Sheets: The UAlbany Graduate School requires applicants to submit transcripts or mark sheets from all previous universities attended. You can apply using an unofficial copy of your transcripts or mark sheets; however, you will be required to submit official copies if you are admitted.
