Experiential, Full-time, Internship Expires May 30, 2023

You want to work for social justice at the global level, but most United Nations study programs take you sightseeing. Do you want just a cursory tour, or do you want to immerse yourself in international affairs?

The United Nations Summer Study (UNSS) program, offered by The New School’s Julien J. Studley Graduate Program in International Affairs, provides graduate and undergraduate students and continuing education professionals with knowledge and skills for understanding the United Nations system, and offers preparation for international careers. Unlike other UN study programs, UNSS takes you beyond a narrow focus on security and diplomacy to investigate development, human rights, humanitarian action, peacekeeping and peacebuilding, and environmental and reform issues. UNSS’s online coursework prepares you to analyze and engage with contemporary issues, policies, and debates in international affairs. UNSS practicums, not found in any other UN summer program, enable you to gain hands-on experience through remote consultancy work with the UN system.

The Zoom rollout event for 2021 (including both United Nations Summer Study and the International Field Program) is available for viewing here:

(Timecode 26:35 for the UN Summer Study presentation)

It is our hope that UNSS 2023 will take place on the ground in New York City, but if it is not safe due to COVID, the program will run remotely. Regardless of which track is realized, given our experience with previous years, we are confident that the knowledge and skills nurtured through the program will remain valuable to those analyzing the UN system and developing a critical perspective and tools with which to pursue a career in international affairs.

Credits: Participants earn 3 or 6 credits. A noncredit option is also available. Because this is an unpaid practicum, participants are encouraged to earn academic credit for this experience. Please consult with your faculty advisor.

Deadlines: Applications are closed for summer 2022. We will start accepting applications for summer 2023 on October 1, 2022. For more information please visit our website.
