The County of Riverside’s Treasurer Tax-Collector Department is currently seeking an Unpaid Student Intern within their Public Services Unit.
A big component of this position involves assisting the public with property tax inquiries, both over the phone and in person. During peak collection periods, the volume of phone calls and in-person visits will increase significantly.
The in-person student internship position is based in Riverside County and offers a flexible work week consisting of approximately 20 hours per week, with flexibility granted around academic obligations. The selected candidate can anticipate the internship to be one year in length.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Under supervision, assists and participates in the work performed by employees of a specific profession; Through participation, receive supervised work experience in a specific professional vocation, and performs other related duties as required.
The intern will be responsible for, but not limited to:
- Handling and processing of all Secured and Unsecured property tax payments for current and prior year Mobile homes and Possessory Interest, Business Personal Property, Aircraft, Watercraft (such as boats and skis), Unsecured Escapes and Supplemental tax bills received by counter, mail, and by field collection efforts
- Answering incoming telephone calls as assigned, or direct for appropriate assistance for eight hours daily as needed
- Calculate penalties, interest, and any collection fees that have been incurred
- Send out receipts for payments and notices for any amounts short
- Send requests for release of lien or summary judgment fees on fully paid assessments as needed upon request
- Updating procedures for specific assigned duties
Assist with:
- Cashiering duties, including verifying, collecting, and receiving monies for Treasury deposits utilizing the PeopleSoft Financials system. Verify, collect, and receipt money for all types of property tax payments. Make changes for customers. Maintain daily balance in a cash drawer using established procedures and be familiar with the Treasury cash protection policy
- Research cancellation of penalty requests and refunds
- Transient Occupancy Tax payments and registrations
- Processing mobile home tax clearance requests and payment processing
- Processing installment payment plans and demands
- Filing and releasing liens
- Process subdivision map desk
- Surplus research
- Scanning request for cancellation of penalties, adding records in the system and process base payments
- Any job within the unit needing completion due to deadline
- Responsible to accomplish other jobs as assigned by Supervising Accounting Technician or Accounting Technician I
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average: 2.5 GPA required. Proof of most current unofficial/official transcript with cumulative GPA must be provided at time of application as well as a resume and supervisor work references, if possible.
Education: Applicants must be currently enrolled/attending school at an accredited college or university in a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s Degree or Certificate program.
Areas of Study: Arts and Humanities, Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or similar, Public or Business Administration, Human Resources, Organizational Studies or similar, Psychology, Sociology, or other Behavioral Sciences.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Good verbal and writing skills
- Current student enrolled in Bachelor’s Master’s, or Certificate Program
- Bilingual required
Additional Desired Candidate Qualifications:
Knowledge, or experience in payment processing, cashiering, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, 10-key, editing/proofing, and sorting/coding
Good verbal skills
Experience researching data and using computer and/or database
Six months to one year of customer service and writing experience
