Career Competency of the Month: Critical Thinking

The NACE Career Competienes are a nationally recognized and adopted framework to prepare graduates for workpalce success in their chosen careers. Each month, we will highlight a Career Competency and how you can use it in your work.

This month, we will discuss Critical Thinking

NACE defines this competency as the ability to “Identify and respond to needs based upon an understanding of situational context and logical analysis of relevant information”

You can help students grow in this area by:

-Resisitng the urge to give students the answer! Ask them powerful questions to make them think deeply. Examples can include: “what are the benefits and drawbacks of this plan?” or “what evidence are we using to influence this decision?”

-Reflect with students on their experiential education to make meaning of their experience

-Assigning projects, homework, or readings that encourage students to view multiple viewpoints and have them make a decision based on evidence
