5 Questions with a Career Champion- Zachary Desjardins

Welcome to our monthly segment of 5 Questions with a Career Champions Challenge Finisher! Each month, we will talk to a Career Champions Challenge Finisher and share their wisdom.

  1. Name and Title: Zachary Desjardins, University Academic Advisor in the Academic Support Center
  2. Favorite Career Champions Challenge Module: Day 7: Interviewing and Employment Compensation Negotiation really spoke to me because it’s all about helping students see their own value. A lot of students come in feeling unsure about their skills or experience, and I love helping them realize that they already have so much to offer. I think it’s so important to build their confidence and remind them that their story matters. Interviews and negotiations are moments where students get to share that story and advocate for themselves, and it’s so rewarding to see them grow in that area.
  3. Incorporation of the Challenge into Work: As an academic advisor, I get to guide students as they figure out their paths—whether they’re certain of what they want or still figuring things out. I always try to reassure them that it’s okay to feel uncertain, but what’s more important is recognizing the strengths they already have, even if they don’t see them yet. I help them reflect on what excites them, what they’re good at, and what challenges they’ve overcome. And when they need a bit more direction, I connect them with resources like Career & Professional Development to keep them moving forward with confidence.
  4. Advice for a Challenger: The most important thing I’d say to any student is to trust in their journey. They might not have everything figured out yet, and that’s perfectly okay. I’d remind them to focus on the strengths they already possess and to stay open to new possibilities. Whether they’re clear on their goals or still exploring, the key is to keep going, knowing that each step builds on the last. It’s all part of the process, and they’re capable of more than they think.
  5. Favorite Podcast/Book/Show Currently: Dare to Lead: Brave Work. Tough Conversations. Whole Hearts. by Brené Brown. This book is so meaningful to me because it really highlights the power of vulnerability and courage. Brené talks about leading with your heart and showing up authentically, which is something I strive to do in my work with students. It reminds me that being open, real, and brave is what helps us build stronger connections and create real growth in others.
