Students can use the summer months to gain valuable experience. In the Make the Most of Your Summer Series, we highlight various students who are making their summer count. This week’s spotlight is on Devin O’Brien, a senior and Computer Science major, who will be working at The Jahnel Group. He’s also one of our awesome Peer Career Advisors (PCA)!
What are you doing during this summer?
I am working as an Associate Developer at a local tech firm, The Jahnel Group, based in Schenectady. I will be working alongside their team, learning the fundamentals of how they design and develop their products. This position also provides me the opportunity to build my own web-application according to their standards. I was connected with The Jahnel Group through an associate of mine who put me in touch with one of their developers. After a conversation with the developer, he immediately put me in touch with Human Resources – and the rest is history.
What do you hope to learn from this experience?
I hope to gain a better understanding of modern design choices in the current software industry. Since The Jahnel Group is a relatively young company, their team provides a unique view into cutting-edge software development. I am eager to work alongside other developers, and further define my style as an engineer. Throughout my academic career, most of my work was independent- I am very excited to become a part of their software team.
Outside of this experience, what else are you looking forward to this summer?
Summer is the time where I like to pick up new hobbies, learn new skills, and step a bit out of my comfort zone. Outside of my work this summer, I am looking forward to tending to my backyard garden, working on the launch of my portfolio website, hiking and mountain biking in the Adirondacks, and enjoying the warm weather that is to come.
